Citrix Published App Opens and Immediately Closes or Opens Twice and Quickly Closes

This one took awhile to figure out. The initial behavior suggested other issues.

A little background:

I am building a new 7.8 Site with PVS. The site components were working fine, except for the PVS image’s published application. They would open then immediately close. There wasn’t any indication of an in error in the event log. Upon closer (and quicker) observation, it could be seen that two applications were opening at the same time and closing.

Well, damn. I spent significant time troubleshooting open and closing with no answer. This glimpse of two applications opening change the entire spectrum.

This happen when two userinit.exe are launched. One or more could be custom inits from third party software. In my case, it appears that Kace adds in its own init with the client install.

The fix was to throw the image in maintenance and add a version with a small registry change back to default.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionWinlogonUserinit
Default Value: C:windowssystem32userinit.exe

You may see a few different paths in here. With Kace, it is safe to change this back and it doesn’t seem to affect its functionality.

After sending this version back to production, I was able to launch apps from the image as expected.
